After their victory in the Simulated Rescue Exercise on Saturday (29.6.), the Italian junior team also shone with an outstanding performance on Sunday (30.6.). They triumphed in every discipline, taking first place and collecting a total of 297 points. The DLRG juniors followed closely behind with 221 points, and the young team from Poland came in third with 173 points.
In the morning, the preliminary rounds started in five disciplines. Eleven out of the twelve participating nations competed in the event. Lifeguards from ten nations made it to the finals, which took place in the afternoon.
In the 100 meter fins rescue discipline, the DLRG juniors narrowly missed the podium. Finja Thoms (Schwerte) initially placed third in the preliminaries but finished in fourth place in the finals, just like Luk Theile (Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf).
In the 4 x 50 meter rescue relay and the 4 x 25 meter rescue of a mannequin, Finja Thoms, along with Jessica Körner (Charlottenburg), Xenia Schröder (Herzogenaurach), and Alina Wagner (Stadtkyll), each won silver. In the latter relay, the team of Luk Theile, Leo Ilias Baumann (Völklingen), Fabian Hermann (Halle/Saale), and Devin Käthe (Luckenwalde) secured second place.
The 50-meter mannequin rescue discipline produced two German vice-junior European champions in individual events: Xenia Schröder and Leo Ilias Baumann. Finally, Jonah Henninger (Bad Windsheim) claimed the bronze medal in the 200-meter Super Lifesaver event.
About lifesaving sport
Lifesaving sport is the competitive variant of lifesaving. It originated from the idea of attracting people to water rescue services. Because good lifesavers are also good lifeguards. In case of emergency, the sport can help save lives. Strength, conditioning, speed, and mastery of rescue equipment are prerequisites for being competitive in the competition. In the DLRG, tens of thousands of people actively participate in lifesaving sport, from local clubs to international competitions.
